Professional Popcorn Ceiling Removal

Acoustic texture ceilings (commonly called popcorn ceilings) were widely installed in Southern Alberta homes from the 1970s through the 1990s. Beyond their dated appearance, textured ceilings collect airborne dust, absorb cooking vapor, and make drywall patching around new recessed pot lights visually problematic.

Removing acoustic texture requires full room containment. Floors and perimeter walls are sealed with plastic sheeting to establish a clean abatement zone. Unpainted acoustic texture is hydrated to soften water-soluble binders, allowing the stipple to be scraped away cleanly without gouging the underlying drywall paper.

Once texture is scraped, bare ceiling drywall invariably reveals tape joints, uneven framing seams, and nail heads. Achieving a modern flat ceiling requires 2 to 3 coats of lightweight joint compound skim-coated across the entire ceiling plane, followed by high-illumination sanding and high-build PVA primer to prevent joint photographing.
